EIN Guide · What a federal EIN is, why your Alaska LLC needs one, and how to get it.

Getting an EIN for Your Alaska LLC

An EIN is the federal tax ID your Alaska LLC uses to open bank accounts, file taxes, and hire. It comes from the IRS, not the state, and it is free. This page explains when you need one, how to get it in about ten minutes, the order to do it in relative to forming your LLC, and what non-U.S. owners do when the online application does not work for them.

One price: $199.00/yr covers your formation, your registered agent, and your annual report, plus the $250.00 state filing fee, at cost.

What an EIN Is and Why Your LLC Needs One

The IRS assigns each business an Employer Identification Number — a nine-digit federal tax ID. Think of it as a Social Security number for your business — the identifier the federal government, banks, and other institutions use to recognize your LLC. It is sometimes called a Federal Tax ID or FEIN, but it is the same thing.

An EIN has nothing to do with Alaska specifically. It is federal, so the process is identical whether your LLC is in Alaska or anywhere else. The state of Alaska does not issue it; the IRS does.

When you are required to have one

  • Your LLC has more than one member. Multi-member LLCs are taxed as partnerships by default and must file a partnership return, which requires an EIN.
  • You plan to hire employees. Payroll and employment tax filings require an EIN.
  • You elected corporate taxation. An LLC taxed as an S-corp or C-corp needs an EIN for its corporate return.

When it is optional but smart

A single-member LLC with no employees can technically use the owner's Social Security number for federal tax purposes. Almost every advisor still recommends getting an EIN, for two reasons: most banks require one to open a business account, and using an EIN keeps your Social Security number off business paperwork, applications, and forms handed to vendors and clients.

When to Get Your EIN in the Formation Sequence

Order matters. The cleanest sequence is to form the LLC first, then get the EIN.

Form first, then apply

Wait until your Articles of Organization are filed and your LLC officially exists before applying for the EIN. The application asks for your LLC's exact legal name and formation details, and you want those to match the state record precisely. Applying before the entity exists — or with a name that does not match — creates mismatches that cause headaches later with banks and the IRS.

Why the order helps

When your EIN, your Articles of Organization, and your bank account all show the same exact legal name, everything downstream goes smoothly. When they disagree — a typo, a name you changed at the last minute, an EIN pulled before formation — you spend time reconciling records. Alaska often processes online formations the same day, so the wait between forming and applying is usually short.

How to Apply for Your EIN

The fastest and most common route is the IRS online application, and it costs nothing.

The online application

Apply through the IRS EIN Assistant at IRS.gov. The application takes about ten minutes and the EIN is issued immediately at the end — you can download and print the confirmation letter and start using the number the same day. The online tool is available during posted IRS hours, so it is not literally around the clock, but it is the quickest option by far.

What you need to apply online

  • The LLC's exact legal name as filed in Alaska
  • The responsible party's name and Social Security number or ITIN. The responsible party is the individual who controls or manages the LLC.
  • The business address and basic details — structure, number of members, reason for applying

It is free

The IRS never charges for an EIN. If a website charges you a fee "for the EIN," you are paying for someone to fill out a free form. You can do it yourself directly, or a formation service can obtain it for you as part of a package — but the number itself is always free from the IRS.

EINs for Non-U.S. Owners

Because there is no residency or citizenship requirement to own an Alaska LLC, plenty of owners are outside the United States. The EIN process has one wrinkle for them.

No SSN or ITIN? Use Form SS-4

The online EIN application requires the responsible party to have a U.S. Social Security number or ITIN. If you do not have either, you cannot use the online tool. Instead, you apply on paper by completing IRS Form SS-4 and submitting it by fax or mail. Fax is faster than mail; processing takes longer than the instant online result, so plan ahead.

Practical notes for non-residents

  • Fill out Form SS-4 carefully — errors slow it down considerably, and you cannot fix them instantly the way you can retry an online form.
  • The wait means you should start the EIN process early if you have banking or tax deadlines.
  • Banking as a non-resident can be more involved than the EIN itself; some banks have specific requirements for foreign-owned LLCs, so research your bank's rules alongside the EIN.

What to Do With Your EIN Once You Have It

The EIN is not the finish line — it is a key that unlocks the next steps of setting up your Alaska LLC properly.

Put it to work

  • Open a business bank account. This is usually the first thing you do with the EIN, and separate business banking is what keeps your liability shield intact.
  • Use it on tax filings. Your EIN goes on federal returns and any employment tax filings.
  • Register for local taxes if needed. If your Alaska borough or city imposes sales or use taxes on what you sell, you may need the EIN to register.
  • Set up payroll if you hire employees.

Keep the confirmation safe

Store the IRS confirmation letter (the CP 575, issued when the EIN is assigned) somewhere secure. Banks and agencies sometimes ask for it, and it is the cleanest proof of your EIN. If you lose it, the IRS can provide a replacement confirmation, but keeping the original saves time.

How Mainstay Filing helps

If you would rather not deal with the IRS application yourself, we can obtain the EIN for your Alaska LLC as part of forming it — so your Articles of Organization, EIN, and registered agent are all set up together and consistent. For non-U.S. owners without an SSN or ITIN, we can help navigate the Form SS-4 route so the EIN does not become the thing that stalls your launch.

Frequently asked questions

Is an EIN free for an Alaska LLC?

Yes. The IRS issues EINs at no cost, and the online application takes about ten minutes with the number issued immediately. Any website charging a fee "for the EIN" is charging for the convenience of filling out the free form, not for the number itself. You can apply directly at IRS.gov, or have a formation service obtain it as part of a package.

Do I need an EIN for a single-member Alaska LLC?

Technically a single-member LLC with no employees can use the owner's Social Security number federally, but you should still get an EIN. Most banks require one to open a business account, and using an EIN keeps your Social Security number off business paperwork. If you hire employees or elect corporate taxation, an EIN becomes mandatory.

Should I get my EIN before or after forming my LLC?

After. Form the LLC first so the entity officially exists, then apply for the EIN using your exact Alaska legal name. This keeps your Articles of Organization, EIN, and bank account all consistent, which avoids reconciliation headaches later. Alaska often processes formations the same day, so the wait is usually short.

Can I get an EIN without a Social Security number?

Yes, but not through the online tool, which requires an SSN or ITIN for the responsible party. Without either, you apply on paper using IRS Form SS-4, submitted by fax or mail. This is common for non-U.S. owners of Alaska LLCs. It takes longer than the instant online result, so start early if you have banking or tax deadlines.

What do I do with my EIN after I get it?

Use it to open a business bank account, file federal and employment taxes, register for any applicable local Alaska taxes, and set up payroll if you hire. Keep the IRS confirmation letter (the CP 575) in a safe place, since banks and agencies sometimes ask for it. Opening a separate business account is usually the first and most important step, because it protects your liability shield.
