How we ranked them

We looked at what each service costs over time, not just in the first year: the price at renewal, whether the state's filing is part of the price or sold separately, how service of process and mail are handled, and what each company's own pages and terms say about extra charges and cancelling. Every rival price here is read from that company's own site, and the date above the table is when this page was last published.

Mainstay Filing is first because it's the one service in this table whose yearly price stays the same at renewal and, for a new company, covers the formation, the agent together. It's also our own service, which the disclosure at the foot of this page says plainly. The other four are listed in the order of how often they come up when people compare South Carolina registered agents.

What a South Carolina registered agent does

Every LLC and corporation formed in South Carolina, or registered to do business there, must keep a registered agent on file with the state. The agent's job is to accept service of process (the papers that start a lawsuit) and official notices for the company, and to pass them on quickly, so the company can't miss a deadline it was never told about.

The agent keeps a physical address in South Carolina where those papers can be delivered during normal business hours, and that address goes on the public record. You can name yourself if you meet South Carolina's rules, but then your own address is public and someone has to be there to receive papers. A commercial agent keeps your address off that line and makes sure nothing is missed while you're away. Who can serve as a registered agent in South Carolina.

Charges to know about

Mainstay Filing. The agent is $149 a year and renews at $149. Service of process is scanned and uploaded the same business day, at no charge. The first three government mailings each year are scanned free; after that a per-piece scan or shipping fee applies, and no plan includes free physical forwarding.

Northwest Registered Agent. Annual report filing is $100 plus state fees per filing, and buying the agent enrolls you in that renewal service automatically (you can cancel it). State and legal mail is free; other mail gets 10 free scans a year, and past that, viewing an item is $15.

ZenBusiness. Its page says the registered agent isn't included in any formation package: $99 the first year, then $199 a year. Worry-Free Compliance is free for the first year on Starter, then renews at $199 a year. A website builder trial is preselected at checkout and renews at $15 a month after 30 days unless you remove it.

Harbor Compliance. The agent is $99 the first year for new customers and renews at $159. Its managed annual report service is $199 per state per year, plus the state's filing fees. Its terms say fees are non-refundable, and the agent service excludes physical packages and mail unless agreed.

LegalZoom. The agent auto-renews at the purchase rate, and its page says the renewal rate is subject to change. Annual report filing is $99 plus state fees per filing, or $199 a year for its Compliance Filings plan. Its Pro and Premium formation packages add an attorney subscription billed at $49 a month after 30 days.

Five questions to ask before you choose

  1. What does it cost at renewal? A low first year matters less than the price you'll pay every year after it.
  2. Is the yearly state filing included? If not, what does the service charge per filing, and are you enrolled in it automatically?
  3. How is service of process delivered? Look for same-day scanning and whether long documents carry a page fee.
  4. What mail is scanned free? Check how many items a year are included and what a scan or forward costs after that.
  5. How do you cancel, and is anything refundable? Some services require proof of a new agent before they release you, and some fees are non-refundable once paid.

Switching your South Carolina registered agent to Mainstay Filing

If your company already exists, switching is a filing with the state that names the new agent. We prepare and file it for you, and you pay only South Carolina's own change fee, at cost. Your current agent's service ends on its own terms, so check whether it renews automatically and cancel it once the change is on file. From then on it's $149 a year, the same at renewal.
