How to Change the Registered Agent for Your Alabama LLC

Your registered agent is the fixed contact point where Alabama and the courts reach your LLC, so anything that disrupts that contact is a reason to update the record. The change filing exists precisely so the state always knows a real, reachable address for serving your company.

Changing the registered agent is a filing with the Alabama Secretary of State that updates the company's record. It is separate from forming the LLC and does not alter anything else about the company: same name, same members, same standing.

The general process

1. Confirm the new agent is ready: Line up your new registered agent and their Alabama street address before filing. If you're switching to a commercial service, the provider gives you the exact registered office address to list.

New agent consent

The statement of change needs the incoming agent's written consent to serve. A commercial service signs off as part of onboarding; an individual should confirm in advance, in writing, that they are willing to take on the responsibility before you name them.

Before you file

• Don't leave a gap: Have the new agent in place before removing the old one. Alabama requires continuous coverage, so avoid a window where no valid agent is on record.
• Notify your outgoing agent: If a commercial provider or an individual is being replaced, let them know so they can close out your account and stop expecting mail for you.

Changing the registered agent

Changing only the agent's address
