How to Change the Registered Agent for an Iowa LLP

A registered agent change is low-risk when done carefully, but a handful of errors show up repeatedly:

• Assuming a mailing-address change updates the agent. Updating where the partnership receives general mail is not the same as changing the registered agent. They are separate fields, and only a registered agent change moves where legal process is delivered.
• Naming an agent who hasn't consented. The incoming agent has to agree to serve. Listing someone who has not signed on can invalidate the designation.
• Using a P.O. box. The agent's address has to be a physical Iowa street address. A box will not satisfy the requirement.
• Forgetting the follow-through. Filing the change but never confirming it processed — or never telling the old agent — leaves loose ends. Verify the update appears in the state's record before you consider it done.
